About Dr Keely Boom Lawyer
Keely Boom is a lawyer admitted to practice in New South Wales and to the High Court of Australia. She is based in the small town of Moruya on the NSW South Coast. Keely aims to provide exceptional legal services to her local clients, particularly in family law and criminal law. She brings 20 years of experience as a lawyer in private practice. As a Moruya local, she seeks to both serve the local community, and also have a positive impact on global issues.
Academic qualifications
Keely has a Bachelor of Law (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce (Finance - Honours). Keely holds a PhD in international climate law. She teaches Environmental Law, Climate Law, Animal Law, and Indigenous Peoples and Legal Systems at Australian universities. Keely holds a the position of Industry/Professional Fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology Sydney.
Keely is a published author of peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and a regular speaker at Australian and international conferences. She has completed further education in international humanitarian law. She is currently completing a course with Stanford University on Artificial Intelligence and the law.
Family law
Keely has many years of experience acting for across a range of family law matters, including both parenting and property. She is on the Legal Aid Panel for family law matters and for care and protection matters.
Criminal law
Keely has many years of experience acting in criminal matters, from traffic matters to complex matters. She appeared in a murder case which resulted in acquittal and a costs order against the Crown. She appeared in multiple Aboriginal fishing rights cases, which resulted in dismissal of charges and costs orders against the Prosecutor. She is on Legal Aid Panels for criminal law matters.
Climate justice
Keely has contributed to the development of climate law and justice. She has written a number of academic publications, and convened and spoken at events to further climate law and justice. She was a co-author of a report that first proposed a levy upon the fossil fuel industry to help communities experiencing the true costs of climate change. Keely is the Executive Officer of the Climate Justice Programme, a nonprofit that works to achieve climate justice through the law.
Indigenous rights
Keely has worked on Indigenous rights, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights, throughout her career. Keely is an Awabakal woman living on Yuin land. Her work has included a focus on Indigenous climate justice, and a focus on Aboriginal rights including traditional fishing. She aims to provide a culturally informed approach to her legal practice.
Global experience
Keely has experience in human rights in Vietnam in relation to the trafficking of children. She previously worked in the Netherlands at a major environmental organisation in international environmental and climate law. She has worked in Italy on international humanitarian law.
